Ulang Tahun Reky untuk Dea
Hey beloveds, it's been one year since I returned to Yogyakarta and work for Hoshizora Foundation. You know this is my passion and it's a blessing that I celebrate one more year of my life here with the children I love. I've done birthday campaign with other platform before but none like this one. This platform is created by Indonesian for Indonesian and now that I can see the children in person, I want to have this chance to give a gift of education.
My daily job allows me to meet all the children in needs in person. It's a rewarding job, but it also kept me from sleeping well unless I do the best that I can to give these children access to education. School supposed to be for free here in Indonesia. But it is not, because schools do not get enough support to conduct proper teaching and learning, especially if they are out in the boonies. So children still have to pay this and that to make sure the schools run okay! These children come from families of farmers and hard day labors, they get by with very very little. But yet, these children never give up their dreams despite the very little they have. So if we can help them to keep digging their potentials to be the best version of themselves and tell them that there are people out there who actually care about them and their efforts to grow as a good human beings, why not. With setting aside very little that we earn every month, we could give them and their families more option to have a better living.
So I am asking you to celebrate my birthday by showing our gratitude for the good life that we have, and pay it forward!
This is just an opportunity/ excuse (whatever you would like to call it =) for us to be together and show compassion for these children, one of them is this very motivated girl who wants to be a doctor.
Dea Syntya Saputri from Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta. Despite her very concerning living situation, her dream is to be a doctor to help other people with financial difficulties! What a noble dream owned by a 12 years old!
I first met Dea through Hoshizora Foundation. We selected her based on her financial difficulties and her motivation to learn and reach her dreams. In a small place where she lives, going to collage is already a big dream because not everybody could graduate from high school. So to see her determination, I am moved!
Dea is a 6th grader at Sidomulyo Elementary School in Yogyakarta.

His father does hard labor, he works to maintain people's rice paddy field or time to time help build houses. Mr. Tukiyat works when there is work. In a good day, he earns 1,000,000 rupiah, which is less than $100 for the whole family for a month. In a good month! The family only has one old bicycle to transport the whole family if they want to go anywhere.
Dea's mother, Mrs. Tursinah works as a rock breaker! A person who breaks big rocks into small ones! She earns 3,000 rupiah (less than 30 cents) for a basket of rocks. Can you imagine what a mother would to to send their children to school? She'd give them every single sweat she has to turn this family's life around!
Their daily spending are 20,000 rupiah (less than $2) meals for the whole family, and since they still live with extended family, they contribute to the electricity which cost them around 40,000 rupiah (less than $4) a month. The rest of their earnings goes to help Dea for school expenses.
Despite all these, Dea is still motivated, she goes to school with smile and does her best in school!
Unlike other children these days, she does not have cellphone, she never watches TV, and her best friend is her books. Watching her read her books, reminded me that there are children in this world who are just thirsty of knowledge and learning.
Dea's parents work really hard for her and tell her that she has to do her best, realize her dream to be a doctor. Not only to turn her family's life around, but to help other people in similar situation.
Friends, when you are in Yogyakarta, I will take you to meet her. Not to see how much struggle she has in her life, but to feel the positive energy that she has towards this life despite of everything.
This platform is compatible for any kind of payment, and when her education fund is collected, I will for sure share to her who are all the people in the world who care for her. Click the botton "DONASI SEKARANG" (Donate Now) and help Dea works towards her dreams!
Thank you beloveds, for taking your time to read this. Thank you for sharing your compassion! Much love from Yogyakarta
